 Week One

Hey guys! Things have been so so so crazy the last couple of weeks so it has taken me this long to get around to actually writing! But, Lily and I are alive! I need to be completely honest and say that our first week here was really rough. People would ask us how we were doing and we would say that it was fun and then lily and I would look each other and laugh/cry because it was actually really hard. the travel here took a total of 35 hours.....35 HOURS people! I had done traveling like that before but it was so insane and exhausting. We flew from SLC to LA, then a 15 hour flight to Shanghai, 3 hour layover ( which I could write a whole separate post on just how nuts that was...Chinese everywhere, it was like 3 in the morning and we had to go through customs and all that not knowing anything they were saying haha) then we had a 3 hour flight to Zhongshan, waited 5 hours in the airport and then took a two hour bus ride to where we are now, at our home in Guzhen!!we are in southern china in the city of lights. literally every store on 5 of the big streets here sell GIANT light fixtures.. they are so beautiful, but we get yelled at if we take pictures of them.

Housing
So after all of that crazy travel we finally got to our apartment. We were sooooo shocked at everything! We don't have real toilets, it's a squatty potty and our shower is right next to it with no curtain or anything. Also lily and I don't have real beds...or beds at all hahah. They built a stage in our room and we literally sleep on the wooden ground..well we have reallyr reallyyyyy thin mats, but the floor is the floor. We have ac though, so our room is always cold well at sixteen degrees Celsius to be exact haha. We love having it cold because it is SO hot and humid here! It's in the hundreds with ninety percent humidity!

Food
The food here is soooooo scary! The first day we got here we were given duck with bones, rice and cooked lotus flower...not good. We eat lunch and dinner at the elementary school and it's always mystery meat and so. Much.  Rice! At least we like the rice, good news is we have finallyfoundafew good noodle places, and a pizza place. They don't have sauce on it though...just cheese and pepperoni. All places like that give us gloves so that we don't get our hands greasy, it's great!

Teaching
The first week we didn't teach,  but we had a ton of meetings and met some of the kids. I teach k3 which are 5 &6 year olds. They love singing baby shark and 5 little monkeys. My kids know a lot of English and they are so hyper alllll the time.  I get hugs and kisses every day and I need them because of all the stress they cause me during class!

Overall this week went okay and we are looking forward to exploring more and getting more teaching done this week! Our catchphrase every day is # Bringontherice
